BONE GRAFTING - LANE ORAL SURGERY

Bone Grafting Improves Your Candidacy for Dental Implants

Bone grafting to treat severe bone loss

The Importance of Bone Grafting

When someone has lost jaw bone volume, either due to tooth loss, oral trauma or periodontal disease, they may experience a change in several aspects of their oral health. Bone loss can produce a “sunken in” facial appearance, cause teeth to shift, create an uneven appearance of the jaw and restrict the ability to have dental implants placed.

Common causes of bone loss
in the jaw include:

Bone grafting is an advanced procedure used to restore this lost bone volume in your jaw and help you qualify for dental implants. For those who suffer from severe bone loss or are in need of replacing all their teeth, seeing an oral surgeon for a bone grafting procedure can produce the most ideal results. Oral surgeons have the years of experience and training to rebuild jaws with bone grafting techniques even for cases that were previously thought to be hopeless. At Lane Oral Surgery our team can place bone grafting material, either taken from you or a donor source, at the site of recession, which will fuse to existing bone to form a solid, even foundation.

We utilize advanced guided tissue regeneration (GTR) techniques when performing bone grafting in Plymouth, MA, to improve the healing time and ensure your new bone is strong. This involves placing a protective barrier (GTR) around the bone grafting material and suturing your gums around it, so the bone heals without interference from the gums. For those with anxiety about dental procedures, including bone grafting, we can incorporate sedation dentistry into your treatment plan. This will allow you to get the care you need without fear or sensations of discomfort. Once the bone grafting material has healed and your jaw is at a healthy level, we can begin the process to place dental implants and give you back a natural, healthy smile.

Ridge Augmentation and Sinus Lift Bone Grafting

At Lane Oral Surgery the most common types of bone grafting we perform are ridge augmentation and sinus lift surgery. Both bone grafting options are used to add bone to the jaw in order to allow for dental implant placement. When a tooth is extracted or lost it leaves behind an empty area in the jaw, which can quickly deteriorate and affect the jaw ridge. Ridge augmentation restores bone where the tooth once was and prepares for dental implant replacement. Patients who are missing teeth in their upper molar area may have inadequate bone to support dental implants due to the sinus cavity residing just above these teeth. We can perform sinus lift surgery to access this location, gently raise the sinus membrane and add in bone graft material to create adequate bone volume for dental implant placement. This is a very delicate procedure and best performed by experienced oral surgeons to ensure best results and no damage to the sinus membrane.
